Vintage Burberry Accessories
More about Burberry
In 1856, Thomas Burberry, at the young age of 21, established his namesake brand in Basingstoke, Hampshire. Initially, Burberry's focus was on developing outdoor attire. The brand's direction shifted in 1879 when Burberry introduced gabardine—a revolutionary, breathable fabric that was also waterproof. This innovation provided a groundbreaking alternative to the traditionally heavy and uncomfortable rainwear of the time. Building on its success, the brand opened its first store in London's Haymarket area in 1891, which marked its growing influence in the luxury market. By 1912, Burberry had designed the "Tielocken," which is often seen as the precursor to the iconic modern trench coat. This early version of the trench coat, distinct for having no buttons and being belted at the waist, gained significant recognition during World War I when it was adopted and adapted for use by British military officers.
