The 10 Most Popular Gucci Bags of 2023

In 1897, Guccio Gucci, the founder of one of the most iconic fashion houses in history, left his native Florence, Tuscany home for the busy life of London, where he worked as the maitre d’ at the Savoy Hotel. According to multiple historical sources, handling the luggage of the rich and famous clientele at the Savoy, inspired him to return to Italy and produce his own line of leather goods. In 1921, Gucci opened the doors to a boutique that sold imported suitcases and travel goods handcrafted by local artisans.

During the late 1940s, Gucci experimented with different materials. With a lack of foreign suppliers, Gucci played with hemp, linen and jute. His most notable innovation was burnishing cane to create the handle of the Bamboo Bag, which was inspired by a saddle’s shape.

Gucci powered on and opened successful shops all over the world. In Milan, Grace Kelly bought a silk scarf decorated with a elegent floral pattern called Flora that’s still sold by Gucci to this day. Meanwhile, Jackie Kennedy Onassis picked out a hobo bag with a piston closure that made a comeback in Gucci’s latest collections. (Both the bamboo-handle bag, dubbed the Diana, and Jackie O’s hobo, were reissued by Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele.)
